Learn To Swim Program- Tadpoles (Ages 3-6 Yrs Old)

The Tadpoles class is the first class for children to begin swimming without their caregivers in the water. This class is designed for children ages 3-6 to become comfortable and confident in the water. In this swimming class, your child will learn to:




  1. Hold their breath underwater.


  2. Roll over independently and float on their back.


  3. Float on their back while moving.


  4. Get to the pool’s edge and climb out.




Which Level Should I Sign My Child Up For?
Level 1
By the end of Level 1 participants will be able to:




  • Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps, or side, travel 5 yards, bob 3 times then safely exit the water. (Can walk, move along the gutter or swim)


  • Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 3 seconds and recover to a vertical position (Can be performed with support)




Level 2
By the end of Level 2 participants will be able to:




  • Step from side into chest deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds then return to a vertical position.


  • Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to the front then recover to a vertical position.


  • Push off and swim using combined arm and leg action on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front then continue swimming 5 body lengths. (Can assist when they are taking a breath)




Level 3
By the end of Level 3 participants will be able to:




  • Start to show stroke proficiency in front crawl and elementary backstroke. Demonstrate comfort in deep water.


  • Jump into deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards, maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.




Level 4
By the end of Level 4 participants will be able to:




  • Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards.


  • Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change directions and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards.






Parents will need to create an account at www.allentownparksandrec.com, receive approval, and then register their child before the start of the program.
