The City of Allentown, Pennsylvania, is excited to announce the installation of a Soccer Mini-Pitch System at Jordan Meadows Park to address community needs for safe, accessible recreational spaces, particularly aimed at youth engagement and crime reduction. Jordan Meadows Park is centrally located amidst high-poverty neighborhoods with limited recreational facilities. Project Structure/Activity: The project involves transforming an outdated hockey rink into a 60’ x 120’ ADA accessible Soccer Mini-Pitch System. This system, developed in collaboration with Musco Lighting and the US Soccer Foundation, features an acrylic playing surface, integrated LED lighting, seating with cupholders, and lockable storage. The design ensures durability and ease of maintenance, supported by a 10-year comprehensive warranty.

Impact on Public Health, Safety, and Environment: The Mini-Pitch System aims to significantly impact public health, safety, and community cohesion:

  • Youth Engagement: Targeting 5,585 youth within walking distance, the pitch will host free clinics, lessons, and leagues, promoting physical activity, teamwork, and mentorship.
  • Crime Reduction: Supported by Allentown Police Department estimates of a 20% crime decrease post-implementation, the pitch provides a positive outlet for youth, potentially deterring antisocial behavior.
  • Community Cohesion: Enhancing social bonds through sports, the pitch fosters inclusivity and reduces isolation, particularly among minority and economically disadvantaged groups.
